BRYCE AND SLOT CANYONS, UTAH
“Our minds, as well as our bodies, need the out-of-doors. Our spirits, too, need simple things, elemental things, the sun and the wind and the rain, moonlight, and starlight, sunrise and mist and mossy forest trails, the perfumes of dawn and the smell of fresh-turned earth and the ancient music of wind among the trees.” ― Edwin Way Teale
Kanab, Utah, epitomizes the American West with its surrounding Navajo sandstone cliffs and sagebrush panoramas. For almost 80 years, this scenery has drawn filmmakers to Kanab. The vicinity of several parks and the remoteness of Vermillion Cliffs National Monument make it an excellent starting point for exploration.
On our first excursion after the pandemic-related limitations were loosened in March 2021, we stopped in Kanab and Arches National Park en route to Denver. Staying in Kanab made it simple to visit South Coyote Buttes, Peek-a-boo and Buckskin Gulch slot canyons, and the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. Although we did win a chance to see South Coyote Buttes, we were not fortunate enough to win the lottery to see the well-known Wave (North Coyote Buttes). Both are a part of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, a sizable and inaccessible area that can only be reached by a four-wheel drive vehicle. Some of the roads required driving through deep sand, and a GPS was needed to find the way.BRYCE CANYON
You feel as if you are on a different planet when you see all those amazing rock formations. Observing red hoodoos in Bryce that are covered in snow gives you the same impression. You may see images of Bryce that depict the hoodoos from above and below here.

BUCKSKIN GULCH AND PEEK-A-BOO
What an incredible sight: towering sandstone walls over a small opening that has been sculpted into a variety of abstract shapes over the centuries, with sunlight casting a lovely fire-like orange glow. You can view images of two incredible slot canyons that we hiked: Buckskin Gulch, one of the world’s longest continuous slot canyons, and Pee-A-Boo, a much smaller one.
